Live Online zoom class, september 6th and 27th, 2025

Cascading Luminaire Fused Class

In this class students will be guided through every step to make a customized fused glass Cascading Lamp. This design is sophisticated enough for today's contemporary aesthetic and reverse frit application is key. It creates an optical effect that adds a great deal of depth so it is just as striking in daylight as it is when it is lit.

This lamp is sized to fit both the draping mold and kiln shelf so it is best to acquire the draping mold before cutting any glass. The smaller lamp pictured on the right was made on a 21" shelf in a kiln with a depth of 13" using a tall floral former. The finished length is approximately 9". With a kiln depth of 8", a shelf that is 14" in diameter and a standard size floral former, a lamp around 6" tall is possible. Keep in mind that the mold must fit in your kiln with at least 2" between the top of the mold and the lid of the kiln. If necessary the kiln shelf can be removed.

The shade can be hung as a pendent light or mounted on a lamp base with a harp and It is best to find the fixture before making the lamp. This is so the hole in the top of the shade can be customized to fit the mounting hardware of the fixture. However if you have a glass grinder it can be adjusted larger after firing the glass.

Some glass cutting experience is required but this class is suitable for all levels. Access to a kiln is necessary to participate actively and students are encouraged to work on their project between sessions.

Dates & Times

This class takes place in two sessions, September 6th from 2pm-4:00pm Eastern and September 27th, 2pm-3:00pm Eastern. The first session will start with demonstrations of the assembly techniques followed by a short question and answer period. In the last session mounting the lamp will be demonstrated and students will have a chance to show their progress and get more personalized attention. The time between sessions is for students to work on their lamp. It is possible that we may run over time if there are a lot of questions. The class will be recorded and remain accessible for a minimum of 30 days. If these dates don't work, please join our waitlist. Additional classes will be scheduled in the future.
