Murrini Vessels

This class is divided into two parts and registration is for either Part 1 & 2 or just Part 2. Part 1 is for those who have access to a vitrigraph kiln and wish to pull their own murrini. Part 2 focuses on the creation of the drop vessel. Murrini can be purchased for Part 2 so Part 1 is optional.

Part 1 is open to all levels, including students new to using a vitrigraph kiln. All the pot setups and loading and pulling techniques will be covered in detail. Multiple designs will be presented but it is possible to complete a vessel with murrini from just one pot. However if there is any extra murrini, it can be traded, shared or sold to other students. A Facebook group is set up for the class so students can connect.

Part 2 focuses on the creation of the drop vessel. Students will learn how to build vessels made entirely of murrini or incorporate it as a striking accent. The class explores a wide range of vessel sizes, surface textures, and finishing options, including rim-removal. Volume, span and drop height will be discussed and multiple design approaches will be demonstrated. Emphasis will be on understanding how glass responds during the drop process so students can confidently adapt designs to their own kilns and creative goals.

A deep kiln is not required to achieve beautiful results, drops of just a few inches can be every bit as visually striking as deeper forms.

A few days before the class, an email will be sent out with the Zoom link along with class handouts and any other pertinent information. If you do not receive it or experience any technical issues please contact Class@fusingclasses.com. It is possible our emails will land in your Junk or Spam folder so please make sure our email address is added to your "safe sender's" list.

Please keep in mind that using a desktop computer or laptop computer with a camera and microphone is ideal and recommended.

Dates & Times

Part 1 is on February 28th from 1pm-3pm Eastern. The first session of Part 2 is on March 28th from 4pm-6:00pm Eastern and the last session is on April 18th from 4pm-5:30pm Eastern. It is possible that we may run over time if there are a lot of questions.

Part 1; Materials & Tools:

A vitrigraph kiln, bottomless steel pot with a separate base and 3mm fiber paper is required. The pot can be round or square and any size. Some of the murrini will be pulled through a standard round profile while others require a specific shape. For those, 1/2" fiber board can be used if a steel base is not available.

Part 2; Materials:

**Part two requires a drop ring or material to make a ring. Commercially available ceramic drop rings are a good option but the ring can be made with Silkemat, vermiculite board, fiber board or Armstrong Ceramaguard ceiling tiles. 3mm fiber paper is not necessarily required for ceramic rings but it is advisable to use it to line some of the other materials.

**Murrini will be required but the amount is up to the student. The project can be made entirely out of murrini or small amounts can be added as an accent. It can be purchased from any vendor but a Facebook group is set up for the class for students to trade or purchase from each other.

Refunds

Cancellations will be fully refunded until five days before the class. After that date 50% of the class fee will be refunded. Once the class has started there are no refunds. There are no refunds for a missed session.
